The Cultural Scene
As the land which nurtured Montaigne, Montesquieu and Mauriac, the Gironde area round Bordeaux is squarely on the cultural map. Beyond that, there is theatre, dance, classical music, jazz and traditional music, World music, cinema, street art, readings and historical events. All these different cultural facets are celebrated with a heady mix of organized festivals and touring shows.
The Bordeaux National Opera, comprising the 118 players of the Aquitaine National Bordeaux Orchestra, the 38 members of the Ballet, and the 40-strong choir, regularly hosts all the big international names.
The National Theatre of Aquitaine is among a number of groups to offer a good mixed program of classical and contemporary works.
