Scientific Research and Development is one of the key priorities for the Region. Close links between companies and research Centres enable the region to maintain its leading position in the development of top-level technological innovations.
Major international research programmes are underway, developing a wide range of skills in key technologies such as laser optics, materials, aeronautics and space and life sciences.
Bordeaux’s Researchers are leading the way internationally in materials, neurosciences, biomedicine, electronics and IT. Their research is particularly recognised in chemistry, mathematics, food and drink, neurosciences, materials, polymers, telecommunications and image and sound technology.
Almost 10,000 people including 6,500 research-lecturers and researchers are associated with R&D activity. More than 200 laboratories are attached to the Bordeaux Universities and to the major National Research Organizations.
All the National Research Centres are present in the region including ; CNRS (National Center for Scientific Research), INSERM (National Institute for Health and Medical Research), INRA (National Institute for Agronomic Research), INRIA (French National Institute for Research in Computer Science and Control), CEMAGREF (Agricultural and Environmental Engineering Research Center) and IFREMER (French Marine Research Institute). The European Institute for Chemistry and Biology develops a number of scientific programmes and brings together Europe’s experts in these disciplines.
Many new laboratories are concentrating their work on themes as diverse as optics and lasers (The Laser and Plasma Institute), ICT (INRIA Futur), genomics (Functional Genomic Platform of Bordeaux), micro photonics (Cellular Imaging Center, Institute of Neurosciences), bio computing (Bordeaux BioInformatics Center) and cognitive sciences (Cognitive Sciences Institute of Bordeaux).
