Mobility and alternative transport

Since 1998, the use of cars has been falling in favour of alternative forms of transport and there is a comprehensive network of public transport covering the whole of the territory.

In 2011, the launch of the “Grenelle des Mobilités” forum, an exceptional process involving all the local authorities and the State, set the objective of finding innovative solutions and a whole new approach to today’s mobility based on individual car use, with the emphasis on public policies to develop public transport.

  • 3 tram lines for a total network of 44 km, 89 stations, 74 trams
  • 100 bus lines, 6 electric shuttle buses
  • Construction of a 4th tram line of 24 km to serve the north-west of the city
  • 15 park and rides with 500 places
  • A metropolis for cyclists with a free-access cycle hire system, VCUB: 1,545 cycles and 139 stations.
  • 944km of cycle tracks and facilities in Gironde, making it one of the leading cycling destinations in France.
  • Presence of a car sharing company: Autocool
  • The Trans’Gironde network of 60 bus lines between urban and rural areas
  • The Regional Express Train network: 270 regional trains and 100 coach services each day
