More than 500 companies in the pharmacy and health sector in Aquitaine employ 8,500 people in the pharmaceutical industry, medical and biotechnology fields. Bordeaux is also home to one of the leading French Hospital Centre’s.
Alongside the large international groups such as Serono, Sanofi Aventis, Abbot, Ceva Santé Animale…a number of specialist SMEs are rapidly developing services with high added value.
The work of National Laboratories and the “High School for Biomolecular Technology” in Bordeaux underpin the region’s strength in this field. Three of the five Aquitaine Universities and twelve graduate schools are directly involved. The creation of the European Institute of Chemistry and Biology in Bordeaux further boosts the scientific potential.
Main lines of research : cell and genetherapy, neurosciences, biochemistry and cell genetics, proteomic genomics, biomaterials, pharmacology, medical imaging, polyphenols, nutrition and toxicology, scientific knowledge of lipids....
Prod’Innov : a competitiveness cluster for « Products and Innovative Health Procedures »
With the aim of accelerating industrial innovation in the health and food sector, this cluster is unique as a result of the association it creates between the agri-food industry and the medical industry.
Among the many areas of expertise that have brought the Bordeaux region to the forefront in health are :
- High-performance, multi-disciplinary biological and medical research
- Particularly dynamic relationships between research, education and training and industry
- Engineering science research incorporating health topics
- A technological environment endowed with high-level non-destructive characterization and test facilities
- A dense network of subcontractor start-ups for the development phases of new drugs, quality control and the identification of new targets for medical control and testing
- Over 50 laboratories involved in genomics, pharmacology, infection, and bio materials
- Structuring elements such as the Regional Incubator, the Regional Teaching Hospital, the Clinical Investigation Centre, the Cell and Gene Therapy Centre, etc

- Imaging and research into computer imagery
