The Gironde boasts exceptional heritage with several UNESCO World Heritage listed sites. Saint-Emilion and its monolithic church and the Citadel of Blaye built by Vauban were joined in 2007 by Bordeaux, Port de la Lune as an exceptional urban ensemble.
Bordeaux also saw the birth of the AGORA Architecture, Urbanism and Design Biennial.
Two major events for the public in contemporary art, EVENTO and NOVART held in alternate years, and many other festive and popular events: the Wine Festival and the River Festival attract thousands of visitors to the quaysides of Bordeaux each year.
Leading international names perform regularly and there is a rich variety of cultural events each year, with major gatherings such as the Historic Film Festival, Libourne Street Art Festival, Jazz in Blaye, 24 Hours of Swing in Monségur, the Nuits Atypiques in Langon, Scènes d’Eté en Gironde …..
The Wine Culture and Tourist Centre is a major project of international importance and will be opening in 2014.
It is destined to become another place of culture and leisure in Bordeaux for visitors from the city and elsewhere. It will be an integral part of the Bordeaux Wet Docks development in the city.

2 new cultural venues will be opening in the near future: the Bordeaux Auditorium to play host to Bordeaux Aquitaine National Orchestra and the major symphonic orchestras, and the Arena on the right bank with a 3,000 to 15,000 venue for shows.
The Gironde is not only 2nd for golf in France, it is also a region characterised by the presence of water: the estuary, river, lake, bay of Arcachon and 250km of Atlantic coastline - 3 of the 30 spots on the international surf circuit are in the Gironde.
With almost 100 different disciplines, professional teams and sportspeople of national and international standards, sport is an important part of life in the region.
The region has played host to a number of famous events: Médoc Marathon, Football French Cup, European Cup and World Cup matches, rugby World Cup matches, Bordeaux International Show Jumping, the 6 Days of Bordeaux (cycling), Décastar in athletics, Lacanau Pro (one of the most prestigious surf competitions), the International Fencing Tournament, the Gujan Mestras Cross-Country race…
For the next European Championship, a new 43,500-seat stadium is to be built.
