For more than ten years, the region has boasted some of the strongest demographic growth in France, with a progression of +20% estimated through to 2030. The majority of the new residents are in the 30-59 years age bracket.
The metropolis of Bordeaux is the 6th largest urban area in France and represents one-quarter of the regional population. It has enjoyed growth of over 1% a year for ten years due mainly to positive net immigration.
A dynamic development process is underway uniting all the different stakeholders, notably through core projects to meet the needs of a metropolis of one million people.
The arrival of the Southern Europe-Atlantic High-Speed Rail Line , expecting over 20 million passengers, will be a major turning point for the future of the Bordeaux metropolis. In 2017 Bordeaux will be 2 hours from Paris; placing the city at the epicentre of an area with huge economic potential: Paris/Toulouse/Bilbao and, in time, Madrid.
Euratlantique, Operation of National Interest, 738 hectares around Bordeaux St Jean rail station. Tens of thousands of new inhabitants and jobs. Also other districts developing along the river, with eco-districts being given pride of place.
Two new river crossings on the Garonne, the extension of the existing tram lines and opening of a new line , creation of a tram-train service, the Grand Arena, Wine Culture and Tourism Centre, Cascades de Lormont Water Park, new Stadium … there is no shortage of new projects and a lot of effort being focused by private and public stakeholders on mobility, energy self-sufficiency and preparing for the metropolis of 2030.
