The ambition of this competitiveness cluster is to become the reference in development and promotion of innovative optics and laser technologies (laser systems and applications, metrology and imaging, innovative physics) in various industrial sectors (aeronautics, health, vision, chemicals, electronics…).

Renewable energies:

Organised around two regional clusters, the Aquitaine Wind Energy Cluster and Sysolia (Aquitaine Industrial Solar Systems), the renewable energy sector is booming. Two other activities are also emerging: biomass and geothermal energy.

Xylofutur “Products and Materials from Cultivated Forests”:

The objective of this competitiveness cluster is to achieve a level of international excellence in the following sectors and processes:

  • Solid wood products for the construction, home improvement, decoration and packaging sectors
  • Products from wood fibres and wood cellulose chemistry (green chemicals).
  • Cultivated forest management and operations for industrial development.
Forestry-Wood-Paper key figures:
  • 1 million hectares of maritime pine,
  • Largest cultivated forest in Europe
  • 34,000 jobs
  • €2.5 billion sales

Geosciences for Energy and the Environment - Avenia:

This competitiveness cluster has the ambition of preparing for the energy transitions through sustainable exploitation of underground resources by responsible development of fossil resources, geological CO2 storage, underground energy storage and industrial geothermal energy.

  • 125 companies, of which 110 SMEs
  • 3,580 researchers
  • 20 public and private training courses

Construction, Resources, Environment, Sustainable Housing - CREAHd:

In the construction and public works sector, this is the cluster for eco-materials and sustainable construction systems through the joint design and sustainable use of building materials and systems and maintenance, management and recycling of structures at the end of their life.

  • 70, 000 employees
  • €6.7 billion sales

With no less than 3,700 companies and 23,000 jobs, Bordeaux and its region is one of the leading French regions in the ICT sector:

  • N°1 region for health IT: over 1,000 employees, 40 companies
  • N°3 for call centres, telecom services and telecom IT services
  • N° 4 for digital sector start-ups
  • Research teams with 1,000 scientists

Health and medical technologies

Thanks to its Health ICT cluster, Bordeaux is asserting its national leadership in health IT and medical imaging: it now represents over 50% of the national workforce in the sector and of national turnover. Three other clusters are currently being created: medical equipment, implants and biomaterials and pharmacy.
