Arcane, the technology transfer unit of the Center for Nuclear Studies at Gradignan in Bordeaux, has just signed an exclusive working agreement with The Antique Wine company, international dealers in fine wines, to deploy a new process for authenticating bottle glass using Ion Beam Analysis techniques.
After dating the wine by measuring the radioactivity levels of Cesium 137, the bottles are then screened through the particle accelerator.
The London-based Antique Wine Company can now offer its clients this new authentication service for very old bottles.
In the first instance, the working agreement will involve handling around 160 bottles from top chateaux and from the company’s own cellars. The second phase, starting in November 2008, will be setting up a French-registered company, Vincerte, to market this service to the industry at large.
